Why Skipping Meals Backfires – And How Balanced Eating Keeps You Energised

Sometimes, you think you’re being clever, trying to cut down a bit — maybe skipping a meal or running late with lunch. And then, out of nowhere, you start feeling dizzy. Light-headed. Like you might just keel over. You don’t know what the hell is going on.

That happened to me the other day. I’d completely missed lunch and started feeling woozy. I had to sit down, take some slow, deep breaths, and I thought I would just wait for it to pass. Definitely not my finest moment.

Then someone appeared with a huge slice of carrot cake. Normally I’d say, “No thanks, I’m trying to be careful,” but I hadn’t eaten all day. So I dug in—and within a few minutes, I felt completely fine. Completely back to normal.

So why does skipping meals sometimes make you feel ready to faint, and why does a quick snack—even cake!—fix it almost instantly?

I believe if you go too long without eating, your blood sugar drops. Your brain and muscles don’t have enough fuel, so you feel dizzy, shaky, or light-headed. Grab a quick snack—even something small—and your blood sugar evens out, and you feel normal again. That day, carrot cake was exactly what saved me.

How to Stop this Dumb Outcome

You don’t need to keep feeling like that. Here are some practical strategies I try to use:

  1. Plan your meals – Even small snacks at the right times prevent long gaps without food.
  2. Keep easy snacks handy – Nuts, fruit, yoghurt, or even a slice of carrot cake can save the day.
  3. Stay hydrated – Dizziness can also come from dehydration. Keep water nearby.
  4. Eat balanced meals – Protein, carbs, and healthy fats help keep blood sugar steady.
  5. Don’t skip breakfast – It really sets you up for the day.
  6. Listen to your body – If you’re feeling dizzy or shaky, sit down, breathe, and have a snack.

At the end of the day, skipping meals won’t help you lose weight any faster. Eating regular, balanced meals keeps your energy up, stops you from getting ridiculously crazy hungry, and actually makes it easier to stay on track. It’s all about moderation, not going without.

So that’s an easy way to stop feeling dizzy or woozy. And hey, sometimes a slice of carrot cake is exactly what the body’s asking for!
