Why Do My Photo File Names Change When I Upload from My Phone?

A quick guide for WordPress bloggers using Jetpack

Have you ever uploaded a photo straight from your mobile phone to your blog using the Jetpack app, and then noticed the file name looks like a jumble of numbers or letters?

Instead of a nice name like mosaic-table.jpg, you end up with something like wp-image-1686123456789.jpg. It’s confusing, and it can make tidying up your Media Library a real headache.

Here’s what’s going on — and how to fix it.

🔍 What’s Happening?

When you upload a photo using the Jetpack mobile app, WordPress doesn’t always keep the original file name from your phone. Instead, it creates a new filename, often based on the photo’s internal ID or the exact moment it was uploaded.

These long names don’t mean anything to us as bloggers, and over time they make your image list messy and hard to manage.

Why It Matters

  • These strange names make it harder to find and reuse your photos later.
  • They don’t help with SEO (search engines can’t guess what “1686123456789.jpg” means).
  • It’s easy to accidentally upload the same image twice, thinking it’s new.
  • Some themes or gallery blocks may use the filename for alt text or captions.

✅ What You Can Do About It

1. Rename Before Uploading (if you can)
If you’re uploading from your computer, it’s easy to right-click and rename your photos before uploading. But on a phone, it depends on what app you’re using.

You might be able to:

  • Tap the file in your Files app (iPhone or Android)
  • Choose Rename
  • Save with something helpful like lemon-cake-slice.jpg

2. Upload from Your Desktop
When you upload photos from your computer instead of your phone, WordPress will usually keep your chosen filename — no surprises.

3. Replace the File Later
If you’ve already uploaded a photo and want to clean up the filename:

  • Go to Media > Library
  • Delete the odd-named file and re-upload with a better name
(If you’re comfortable with plugins, you could use Enable Media Replace — but that’s optional.)

Final Tip

Using Jetpack from your phone is handy when you’re on the go, but for better control of image names and sizes, uploading from your computer is usually the better option.

If you’re looking to improve your blog speed or tidy up your Media Library, I’ve also written a post on how to stop WordPress from loading the same photo twice.
