Mercer Bay Loop Walk – Cliff Top Walk with Great Views

I love to walk outdoors. Anywhere. Parks, beaches, forest, city. However I was slightly apprehensive about this walk because it involves cliff top paths and I am not good with heights. I need not have worried.

Location: starts at 2-20 Log Race Road, Piha

More information: Auckland Council Paths

Facilities: long drop toilet

The path was moderate and it’s easy to follow with well formed gravel paths, little bridges and solid platforms where the look out to the rugged coastline is beautiful. And it felt safe.

Start at the end of Te Ahua Road, at the site of a former radio station. You will need to use the treatment station to spray and scrub your shoes in an effort to stop kauri dieback. Then head off in a clockwise direction and follow the track signs to the lookout which gives an amazing view up and down the coast.

Be sure to pack a picnic lunch.

Towards the end of the walk we stopped to take amazing photos of Piha Beach including Lion Rock. It was so high it felt like looking down from a plane!!

We did this walk only just last week and we were so lucky to strike such a beautiful day… it was the day before a huge rain fall in Auckland! Since then Auckland has been in a state of emergency and the flood damage has been devastating. In just one day we experienced a whopping 249mm of rain. Read more here. Sadly this has also led to loss of life and loss of homes.
