I’ve always enjoyed walking. These days, I’m not so keen on walking in the rain like I used to, but on a dry day, I love to head out the door. We walk around the neighbourhood, and often down to the nearby lake. On weekends or holidays, we go further afield—regional parks, beaches, or city walks. It’s a habit we both enjoy.

New Zealand really is the best place for walking. 🚶♀️We’ve got amazing tracks, parks, and beaches, and we’re spoilt for choice. When we travel around NZ or overseas, walking is a big part of what we do. We like to explore on foot wherever we are.
My Fitbit Keeps Me Honest
I count my steps with my Fitbit and try to hit 10,000 a day. When on holiday it can be well over 20,000 however at home during winter, it’s more like 5,000—but that’s still better than nothing. I always feel better when I’ve had a good walk, even just a short one.
Why I Need to Move
When I first started working, there were no computers. My job was mostly fieldwork and I was on my feet most of the time. But as office work and technology took over, I started sitting more, and it didn’t help my health. Long hours in front of a screen meant I stiffened up, my legs swelled, my back seized, you name it… and the weight crept on.
Now, I know I need to keep moving. If I sit too long—especially on the couch—I start to feel it. So I remind myself: get up, stretch, walk around the block. It all counts.
Just Keep Moving
Walking doesn’t need to be schmancy. Just put your shoes on and go for a stroll. It’s easy, it’s free, and it works. Even a little bit each day helps.

We walk a lot too, especially when we travel, but at home we love close to the Rocky Mountains so in summer, hiking is a favourite activity.
