After the indulgence of Christmas and New Year, sometimes we just want something fresh, light, and delicious to take to a BBQ. That’s where the Watermelon Berry Cake comes in—easy, colourful, and fun to make!

What You’ll Need
- ½ a watermelon
- Extra watermelon for cut out shapes
- 1 punnet strawberries
- 1 punnet blackberries
- 1 punnet blueberries
- A few sprigs of fresh mint
- Toothpicks
- A cookie cutter (optional, for fun shapes!)

How to Make It
- Peel and slice your watermelon
Cut it into a thick, round “cake” shape as your base. - Get creative with shapes
Use a cookie cutter to cut out hearts (or stars!) from extra watermelon slices for the top—because why not? - Assemble your berries
Wash and pat dry all the berries. - Build your cake
Poke strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries into the top and down the side of the watermelon using toothpicks. Add your heart-shaped cutouts too. Don’t worry about perfection—go wild! I just covered the front half, but you can cover the whole thing if you like. - Add the finishing touch
Tuck in a few sprigs of mint for freshness and colour.
Quick Tip
Make it before you head out and keep it chilled until serving. Toothpicks make it easy for guests to grab a piece, and the colours will wow everyone at the table!
Did Anyone Like It?
When I took this to the BBQ at first everyone thought it was a cake when I put it on the table. There was a good chuckle when they realised it was actually watermelon and fruit.
I think it was a success overall, with everyone seeing the fun in it—picking at the fruit, cutting the watermelon into wedges, chatting, and going back for more.
Enjoy the fresh vibes, laughs, and berries—because dessert doesn’t have to be heavy to be fun.
