Eating Out Without Going Overboard (Too Much)

I love going out to eat. Birthdays, anniversaries, catching up with friends—it’s one of life’s pleasures. And at this stage in life, why not enjoy it?

Having said that, eating out does come with its own set of challenges when you’re trying to stay on track with your weight. The menu’s full of temptation, the cocktail list is calling, and then someone always orders dessert. But I’ve come up with a few tricks that help me enjoy the night without feeling like I’ve undone all my good efforts.

One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”

🥗 What I Look For on the Menu

If there’s a grilled fish or chicken option, I’ll often go for that—especially if it comes with a salad or veg. I’m not afraid to ask for dressing on the side or to swap chips for something lighter such as salad. I’ve found most places are very happy to do that.

Sometimes I’ll order a starter or entree-sized meal instead of a full main. That way I still feel part of the occasion but it’s not too much.

🍽️Buffet Tips: How to Fill Your Plate Smartly

If it’s a buffet, my tip is to start by choosing your protein and carbohydrate, then pile plenty of salad on top. It might look like a big plate, but it’s mostly veggies, so it’s not as heavy as it seems. This way, you get a good balance and still feel like you’ve filled your plate nicely.

And as for the dessert buffet—how on earth can you possibly choose just one? My advice: try to stay away from it altogether if you can! It’s easier said than done, but skipping that table really helps keep things on track.

🍷 Drinks, Cocktails & Wine

I don’t drink much wine—maybe a bit of bubbly for special occasions—but I do enjoy a pretty cocktail now and then, and I’m not about to give that up when I go out. Usually, I stick to one glass, or two if it’s a proper celebration. I try to choose something simple and not too sugary, like a gin and soda with lemon or soda water with a splash of peach vodka.

🎂 Birthday Cake and Treats

If there’s cake, I always have a slice—but I don’t go back for seconds anymore. One piece, savoured slowly, is enough for me. And if it’s not my favourite, I’ll just take a bite or two and leave the rest. (Yes, it’s perfectly fine to leave cake on the plate!) And if anyone’s watching, I just think to myself “it’s no one else’s business”.

Final Thoughts

Eating out used to mean I’d go all in—starter, main, dessert, wine, and a bit more. These days I’ve realised I can still enjoy it all, just a bit more mindfully. I still have fun, I still eat the cake—but I feel better afterwards too.

Because in the end, it’s about the company, the laughs, the clinking glasses… not stuffing yourself silly like we used to.
