We don’t often think in labels, but being an interracial couple is part of our story. When people see us together—especially when we’re dressed in traditional Indian clothes—there’s usually a smile, sometimes a question, and now and then, a curious look. I actually enjoy that. I like it when people come up for a chat. It gives us a chance to show that we’re really just like any other couple.

Basker and I come from different backgrounds—he grew up in Malaysia with Indian roots, and I was born and raised in New Zealand with English roots. On paper, it might look like we’re from different worlds, but in real life, we’ve found plenty of common ground. We both value kindness, family, and good food—those things cross all borders.

Over the years, we’ve embraced the best of both our cultures. I’ve grown to love the warmth of Indian hospitality and the richness of the food (mild curries for me!). Basker’s picked up a taste for pavlova and enjoys the laid-back Kiwi lifestyle. We both love dressing up for special occasions—it’s a way of honouring tradition and showing respect for each other’s roots. And we both share a love of people, good conversation, and celebrating life in all its colour.

Our day-to-day life, and our family too, is much like anyone else’s. We laugh, cook, potter around at home—and we both love to travel. Exploring new places together has been one of the real joys of our relationship. We’ve seen so much, learned from each other’s perspective, and had a lot of fun along the way.
If someone’s curious, we’re always happy to talk. The more we share, the more people realise that, in the end, we’re not so different. And in our own quiet way, we hope that helps make the world just a little more open, kind, and connected.
