Looking for a peaceful escape but still in the city? We spent a lovely day out in Auckland, enjoying nature and delicious food at two fantastic spots: Kauri Glen Reserve and the Chelsea Sugar Works. Whether you’re after a scenic walk or a tasty meal, both places are perfect for a relaxed outing.
First, we explored Kauri Glen Reserve, a beautiful bush-clad haven with ancient kauri trees. Then, we treated ourselves to lunch at Chelsea Sugar Works, where we enjoyed delicious food with a stunning view. Here’s how our day went!
Our first stop was the Kauri Glen Reserve, 📍located at 15 Kauri Glen Rd. It’s a lovely bush-covered spot, home to ancient kauri and tānekaha trees, some of which are between 300 and 400 years old. It’s the perfect place to enjoy nature and marvel at these majestic trees.

One of the highlights of the reserve is the 60-metre treetop boardwalk, which sits 18 metres above the ground. From here, you get a fantastic bird’s-eye view of the forest and the beautiful bush. The boardwalk also helps protect the environment by preventing the spread of kauri dieback disease, so don’t forget to use the shoe cleaning stations at the entrances—it’s an easy way to help preserve this amazing place.

Parking around the reserve is a bit limited, so be prepared to walk a short distance from the surrounding streetside parking to the reserve. The walk in the reserve is more of a there-and-back type, as the paths mainly run through the reserve, but the boardwalk at the top was definitely the highlight. You’ll also spot beautiful ferns and a small creek down below. Take a look at our photos for a peek!

After our walk, we headed to the Chelsea Sugar Factory, 📍located at 100 Colonial Road, Birkenhead, Auckland, where we were lucky enough to walk-in and get a table at “Sugar Cafe”. It was a busy spot, especially with the school holidays in full swing, and while many Aucklanders are off enjoying the beaches and camping, it seems those sticking around the city are flocking to local restaurants and attractions. We started with rose lattes, then had a toasted chicken sandwich, followed by the real treat—raspberry lamingtons! These are the signature dessert at the café, and luckily, Nisha had spoken to the waitress as soon as we arrived and arranged to have two lamingtons put aside for us. When it came time for dessert, we found those in the cabinet were all sold out, luckily we got ours at just the right time!
After lunch, we took a stroll around the gardens, enjoying the view of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the city skyline in the distance across the sea. It was a lovely, relaxing outing—not too demanding, but with beautiful views and something a little different.
