Festive Walk Through Auckland: Christmas Decorations & Delicious Treats

A few days ago, we decided to take a walk through 📍Auckland City to enjoy the Christmas decorations and get into the holiday spirit. It was a nice chance to get out and increase our step count, especially with the weather being so pleasant.

We usually prefer the beaches and parks around Auckland, but this time we thought we’d explore the city center. There’s something special about seeing the city all dressed up for Christmas, and it didn’t disappoint.

We started the day by catching the train from Morningside Station. Much easier than dealing with parking in the city! The trains are frequent, so we were soon right in the heart of Auckland, ready to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Caught in the act… I’m searching for the perfect camera setting!

Our first stop was right in front of the Britomart Train Station, where we saw the big Christmas tree. It’s always a lovely sight, and we made a note to come back in the evening to see it lit up. Along the way, we couldn’t resist snapping a few photos of the other decorations – it really makes the city feel festive.

Next, we stopped for a coffee at a little café in the Commercial Bay Shopping Centre. The coffee was excellent, just what we needed after all that walking.

One of the highlights of our walk was the Christmas window display at Smith and Caughey’s department store. Every year, they go all out with their displays, and this year’s was called The Adventures of Hutu and Kawa. It featured lovely scenes with animated puppets and really got us in the holiday spirit. If you’d like to know more about it, you can read more about it here.

After a bit more walking, we were ready for lunch, so we made our way to Federal Street Deli. This New York-style diner is quickly becoming a favourite of ours. We had a Reuben sandwich and some poutine, both delicious. The Reuben was loaded with tender corned beef and melted cheese, and the poutine was just as good as you’d expect, with crispy fries, gravy, and cheese. It was the perfect refuel after all that walking.

Enjoying a cocktail and cold beer at Federal Street Deli before having lunch!

After lunch, we headed next door to the Sky City Hotel and Tower to see their Christmas decorations. The tree outside and the baubles in the lobby were gorgeous, and the whole place had a lovely holiday feel. There were plenty of tourists taking in the sights, which made it feel even more festive.

We wrapped up our day with a walk back to the train station and caught the train home, feeling happy after a lovely, festive day out.

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season!
