Comforting Winter Lunch: Cheesy Spaghetti Cases

There’s nothing like a comforting snack to warm you up on a chilly day. These Cheesy Spaghetti Cases are an old favourite — simple, tasty, and always a hit.

They were a classic Kiwi kids’ party food back in the day — you’d often see a tray of them at birthday parties, and they’d disappear fast! I remember having tinned spaghetti on weekends too. It was quick, easy, and something we all enjoyed.

These little cheesy cases bring back those memories, but with a fun twist.

Tried and Tested

They’re great for lunch or a light dinner, and perfect if you’re after something familiar and satisfying. A little bit of nostalgia, a little bit of cheese, and a lot of flavour.

Ingredients

  • Tinned spaghetti
  • Sliced bread (white or whole wheat)
  • Butter
  • Grated cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • Muffin or patty tins

Directions

  1. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗻𝘀: Preheat your oven to a moderate temperature. Take slices of bread and generously butter one side of each slice.
  2. 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀: Gently press each slice of buttered bread, butter side down, into the patty tins, creating little cases or cups.
  3. 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶: Spoon a portion of tinned spaghetti into each bread case, filling them up to the top.
  4. 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲: Sprinkle a generous amount of grated cheese over each spaghetti-filled bread case. The cheese will melt and create a deliciously gooey topping.
  5. 𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗽𝘆: Place the filled tins in the preheated oven and bake until the cheese has melted completely and the edges of the bread cases are golden and crispy. Keep a close eye on them as they bake—they can turn from perfectly golden to burnt in a flash!
  6. 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆: Carefully remove the spaghetti cases from the tins and transfer them to a plate. They are best enjoyed warm, straight from the oven.

  1. True comfort food. My mom made something similar except she wasn’t as fancy and didn’t put them in muffin tins, it was just the flat bread. This brings back great memories. Maggie
