We visited Genting Highlands during our stay in Malaysia in November 2023. We wanted to visit with family and friends in Ipoh and intersperse our stay with small trips around Malaysia in an attempt to see more of this beautiful country. This was the third tourist attraction we visited, read about our trips to Papan and Melaka by following these links. We didn’t know exactly what to expect on this trip but we knew it was a popular spot with families and this easy getaway for one or two days sounded just the ticket.
Location: Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park

Up in the cool hills of Malaysia, tucked into the Titiwangsa Mountains, you’ll find Genting Highlands—a bit of a hidden gem and a nice break from the heat. We took the bus up from Ipoh, but if you’re coming from Kuala Lumpur it’s only about an hour and a half by car, so very easy to get to.
It’s quite the spot—fresh mountain air, lovely views, and lots to see and do. We spent a couple of days up there and packed in a fair bit. Come along as I share what we got up to during our little getaway in the clouds.

Our little adventure kicked off as we hopped on the bus and started winding our way up those twisty mountain roads, leaving the busy city behind. When we finally arrived at Genting Highlands, we were hit with that lovely, fresh mountain air and views that seemed to go on forever.
We checked into our hotel, but to be honest, it didn’t quite live up to what we were expecting. If we go back, I’d definitely try staying at the First World Hotel next time. It’s the biggest hotel in the world—can you believe it? Nearly 7,000 rooms! Plus, it’s right in the middle of all the action and fun, so it seems like a much better spot to be.
Anyway, our hotel was located away from the main attractions in a more quiet spot which had some advantages. It meant that in the early morning, through the mist, we were able to hear the distinctive and loud calls of wild siamangs! The whoops and squeals and high pitched barking from a distance were a sheer delight to hear.

Once we were all settled in, we decided to get out and explore what makes Genting Highlands such a popular spot for tourists. We grabbed a cab and headed to the casino, which was an interesting experience—though I’ll admit, a bit smoky and not as fabulous as I’d hoped.
But the Genting Skyway cable car ride? Now, that’s something else! The views from up there were just breathtaking, and it took us right to the exciting Genting Skyworlds Theme Park. And let me tell you, it’s a real busy place with so much to do! There are rides, arcade games, 3D movies, shops, restaurants, bars, a casino—you name it, they’ve got it! It’s an entertainment hub on steroids! No shortage of fun here, that’s for sure.

We arrived at the theme park just before Christmas, and oh my gosh, it was a sight to see! The place was lit up with bright screens, twinkling lights, and decorations everywhere. Festive music filled the air, adding to the holiday cheer. Everywhere you looked, the spirit of Christmas was in full swing, turning the park into a magical wonderland. We couldn’t help but laugh and zip around like kids, wide-eyed and amazed at all the sights and sounds. It truly captured the excitement of the season!

In the evening we decide to visit some of the restaurants and bars. The SkyHigh Café is perched at the top one of the highest points in the park with breathtaking views of the entire SkyWorlds landscape.
As our two days in Genting Highlands came to an end, we found ourselves a little sad to leave this man-made mountain paradise of fun and laughter. There’s just so much to see and do, especially for kids. We’re leaving with happy memories and a strong desire to come back—maybe with the whole family next time, especially if there are little ones in tow. It’s definitely a place worth visiting again in the future!

What’s really remarkable about Genting Highlands is how it’s turned what used to be dense jungle into this buzzing hub of entertainment and relaxation. Even though there’s a lot of manmade touches, it still manages to hold on to a certain charm, mixing the artificial with the natural surroundings in a way that’s both surprising and quite breathtaking.
Genting Highlands might be small on the map, but its appeal is clear. Whether you’re looking for fun, adventure, a bit of rest, or just a break from the usual, this mountain retreat offers an escape you won’t soon forget.
From misty mornings to bright lights at night, Genting Highlands gave us a bit of everything. ♡ Janet
